When are cryptoasset rates determined for buying crypto?
When are cryptoasset rates determined for buying crypto?

Crypto rates are finalized upon funds received, not when the transaction is initiated. Explore factors influencing fund reception timing.

Updated over a week ago

The amount of crypto you receive is based on the exchange rate at the time your payment reaches our account (the moment we actually receive the funds you sent), not when you place the order.

The faster your payment method is, the less likely the exchange rate will change significantly between the time you initiated the transaction and when we receive your funds.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Floating Exchange Rates

At Ramp, we use a floating exchange rate model to price cryptoassets. A floating exchange rate means the value of a currency changes based on market supply and demand.

In the context of cryptocurrencies, floating exchange rates mean that the value of a cryptoasset can change between the time you initiate a transaction and when the transaction is completed.

๐Ÿ“Š Why Crypto Rates Fluctuate

Crypto exchange rates fluctuate due to various factors

  • Market Demand and Supply: High demand or low supply can increase rates.

  • Economic Factors: News, regulations, and economic indicators can impact rates.

  • Technological Developments: Innovations and improvements in blockchain technology can influence prices.

  • Market Sentiment: Investor confidence and market trends can cause rapid price changes.

  • Liquidity: High liquidity leads to more stable prices, while low liquidity can cause significant fluctuations.

๐Ÿ’ธ Payment Methods and Transaction Speed

The speed of your payment method influences how quickly your transaction is completed, which can affect the exchange rate you receive. Different payment methods have varying settlement times, so choose wisely to get the best rate.

Please note that not all payment methods are available in every region. Below is a table showing the time it takes for each payment method to settle and its availability. For more information, check out What payment methods does Ramp support for buying crypto?.
